Lady Masham and Leibniz, Correspondence (1704) 1

Damans Cudworth, Lady Masham (1659–1708), was the daughter of Damaris and Ralph Cudworth, the leading figure of the Cambridge Platonists, whose major work, The True Intellectual System of the Universe, was a refutation of determinism as atheistic (in relation to the works of Descartes and in opposition to those of Hobbes). Lady Masham is particularly noted for her long, close friendship with Locke, who took up residence in her household from 1691 until his death in 1704. During this time she published her first work, A Discourse Concerning the Love of God (1696), and shortly after Locke’s death, Thoughts in Reference to a Vertuous or Christian Life (1705). Her correspondence with Leibniz explored their respective views, including Cudworth’s various doctrines, Leibniz’s pre-established harmony, and the relationship between body and soul.
